6 Steps to Discover Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Want

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. – Aristotle

Creating a life of greatness starts with knowing who you are.

You have to know who you are,
to know what you want to do,
to know why you do what you do,
to know what to do to live your greatest life.

6-Steps-to-Discover-Who-You-Are-so-You-Become-Who-You Want

Knowing your identity allows you to use your thoughts and emotions in empowering ways that manipulate your habits and actions toward accomplishing your dreams.

When I did the exercise below, I thought I had a good grasp on who I was but found several shocking beliefs that I didn’t realize I had.

I discovered that I am a much bigger nerd than I allowed myself to accept. But now I embrace my love of learning, reading, and writing and am much happier for it!

Knowing myself has allowed me to maximize my quality of life.

When you do this, you’ll find empowering traits that can move you forward. You’ll also find disempowering beliefs that sabotage your progress toward a brighter future.

Fortunately, once you know who you are, you can begin to establish who you want to be. You’ll learn that your identity is simply a matter of personal interpretation, decisions, and perception.

You will as I have, replace your destructive thoughts and beliefs.

You’ll adapt a new way of thinking that will almost instantly shape you into your greatest self.

How to find your identity.

1. Peace and Quiet

Get to a quiet place with no distractions, maybe outside. If you don’t create a safe and curious state, all fears and hesitations about identity will continue to give you false answers.

2. Ask and You Shall Receive

Get ready for a big brainstorming session!

Ask who am I?

Let whatever comes flow out of you, do not judge or filter it, remember no one else will be reading this. Be open and honest with yourself.

Continue to ask again and again. Dive deeper and deeper each time you ask.

Consider your characteristics, ambitions, emotions, what you love, and the roles you play.

Read your description. How does it feel? Is it missing something?

Keep going until you have something that feels right and isn’t missing any details.

3. Dictionary Definition

Next imagine your name in the dictionary, what definition would follow it? Write that down. It’ll serve as quick summary of who you are.

4. ID Tag

Now consider if an ID tag was created to represent who you truly are. What if this card held the only information that would remain about you if you were to die right now. What would be on it and what would be left off?

Would it list your accomplishments? Characteristics? Physical appearance? Aspirations? Skills? Job? Motto?

5. Compile and Condense

Now take all of this information and combine similar items, chop off what doesn’t resonate and try to narrow down your identity.

6. Appreciate Yourself

How do you define yourself? Do you identify with your internal characteristics or your external features? Do your roles (parent, spouse, employee) play a big part in how you see yourself?

Pause and take a moment to appreciate yourself.

Trying to be anyone else is a waste of who you are.

Celebrate you, be proud of yourself.

Does it cause pain?

If certain aspects of your identity cause you pain, don’t worry. Your identity comes from what you’ve decided about yourself and your life. It’s simply what you choose to identify with.

Remember you can’t reach what’s in front of you until you let go of what’s behind you.

Now that you you know who you are, it’s time to supercharge your identity! Are you ready to discover and embrace your greatest self?
