Do what makes you happy, be with who makes you smile, laugh as much as you breathe, and love as long as you live. – Rachel Ann Nunes
To do what makes you happy should be common sense, right? Well… not really – as simple as the concept is many folks (including myself) forget this small piece of wisdom. Maybe you view the act of doing what makes you happy as pure entertainment – but it’s not just simply entertainment. You might feel like you are being selfish or unproductive while engaging in leisurely activities – but actually you are doing the opposite!
When you do what makes you happy, whether it’s a one time event (going shopping) or a life choice (working your dream job) – you optimize the positive impact you have on the world.
3 Ways Doing What Makes You Happy Improves You
1. You Become Happier
Obviously by engaging in more activities that you enjoy – you’ll become a happier person. The happier you are, the kinder you become towards other people. You’ll be more likely to smile at them, make a joke, or give a compliment. Being nice to people snowballs – because not only do you feel better being kind, but you are likely to get a polite gesture back and the cycle continues.
By making someone else feel happier – they may do the same when they interact with others. Just like that, you’ve created a domino effect and are making the world a better place just by doing what makes you happy!
2. Mind and Body Work Together
If you don’t make time to do what makes you happy – you are likely to feel numb inside. I think this is caused by a break in the mind-body connection. Things that don’t make you happy might stimulate your body (shoveling dirt) or your mind (balancing your budget), but they are unlikely to engage the two at once.
Instead, when you make time to do what you love – your mind and body work in complete harmony! This inner relationship makes you feel amazing and keeps you healthy. By doing what makes you happy, you are less likely to suffer from mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
This means you will have a demeanor that resonates with people and boost their moods.
3. Energizer Bunny Jr.
When you are doing what you enjoy and make breaks in your day to do the things you like – you’ll have more energy. It takes a lot of effort to do those things you dislike – but doing activities that make you happy help you refresh and refuel. Feeling happy motivates you to keep working hard because you want to continue feeling that way.
Unhappy activities drain your energy – get involved with those things that excite you and you’ll see your productivity soar!
Do what makes you happy – you’ll in turn make others happy, boost your productivity, and make the world a better place!
